Frequently Asked Questions
How many people does Kala seat?
Kala is designed to seat 2–3 adults. The upper bench comfortably fits two adults during hotter sessions, with the lower bench offering extra space when required. A fourth adult may also stand, bringing the total capacity to up to four adults per session.
How long does it take to heat up?
About 30 minutes to ~85 °C in typical conditions. The high stone mass then smooths out temperature swings, keeping heat and steam consistent throughout the session.
What temperatures can it reach?
Typically 85–95 °C at top-bench height; with a longer pre-heat both heaters can reach ~100 °C.
Can I pour water on the stones?
Yes, use fresh water in small ladles for steam (löyly).
Can I leave it outside exposed to the rain?
Yes, Kala is designed for outdoor use, so you can leave it exposed to the environment all year round.
Whats the difference between the Kala and an Infrared sauna?
Kala is a traditional sauna, delivering high, enveloping heat (85–100 °C) with optional steam — supporting a stronger cardiovascular load, deeper relaxation, and better post-session sleep.
Infrared saunas run cooler (45–60 °C) and much drier. They suit shorter, milder sessions, but typically don’t reach the heat-adaptation range associated with the benefits seen at 85 °C and above.
What's the difference between the Kala and other outdoor saunas?
Many barrel and off-the-shelf saunas are poorly designed. They warm more slowly due to undersized heaters, while lower benches keep you in cooler air and their curved ceilings trap heat overhead. Ventilation and materials are often poor, leading to harsher steam and quicker weathering in Australian conditions.
How much does a session cost to run?
Here’s an easy way to estimate running cost using your own electricity usage rate.
Cost formula
Cost = Heater kW × Hours × Your rate (per kWh)
Example (6 kW heater):
- 1 hour at full power: 6 × 1 × $0.30 ≈ $1.80
How does my sauna get delivered?
Your sauna weighs in excess of 700kgs and will be delivered by a specialist delivery provider in a flat packed crate to your curb for easily assembly. Pre-assembled panels and components can then be unpacked and moved to your desired assembly location.
Do you ship overseas?
Yes, we ship all over the world. International shipping costs will apply, and will be added at checkout. Expert assembly is unavailable for orders outside of Australia.
What maintenance do I need to do for my sauna?
Timber Care
- Apply food-grade paraffin oil to the benches and backrest every 12 months (6 months with heavy use). Each sauna arrives double-coated for your convenience.
- Apply Intergrain UltraClear Exterior to the Spotted Gum cladding every 24-36 months to maintain its appearance and weather resistance. If left untreated, the timber will naturally oxidise to a silver-grey patina.
Post-Use Ventilation
- Wipe down excess water from surfaces and allow the sauna to air out after each use to prevent excessive moisture build-up.
What does the 5 year warranty cover?
Our 5-year warranty covers all design, manufacturing, or part failures under fair and expected use. If something breaks where it shouldn’t, we’ll send a replacement part, or for more complex repairs, dispatch an expert to fix it.
